Retreat-based Investigation of Survivor Experiences with Psilocybin (Project RISE): Primary Outcomes Paper
Abstract
Cancer survivors often face persistent psychosocial challenges—depression, fear of recurrence, loss of meaning, body image concerns, and fatigue—that are inadequately addressed by conventional care. Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that psilocybin, when administered with therapeutic support, can produce rapid and durable reductions in depression, anxiety, distress and broader eudaemonic wellbeing in patients with life-threatening cancer. However, existing research has been primarily been conducted in tightly controlled clinical trial environments, with strict eligibility criteria and limited ecological validity. The present study supplements clinical trials research by evaluating outcomes following a naturalistic psilocybin-assisted group retreat designed and facilitated by individuals with lived experience of cancer.
