Attitudes of European psychiatrists on psychedelics: A cross-sectional survey study

OSFApr 5, 2022

Abstract

Recently, there has been a renewal of research interest in psychotherapy that uses psychedelics as an adjunct to treatment (1, 2). Currently published studies on attitudes on psychedelics show a general openness to further research on using psychedelics as medical treatments. However, studies on psychiatrists and psychologists show limited knowledge of the properties of psychedelics (3, 4) and that younger, male psychiatrists at the trainee level seem to have more positive attitudes (3). It is important to understand how mental health practitioners view psychedelics, as any developments in psychedelic research and therapy will rapidly bring up complex questions and implications for practice in psychiatry and psychotherapy (4, 5). Thus, the aim of this study is to conduct a web-based survey of European psychiatrists using a previously validated instrument, the Attitudes on Psychedelics Questionnaire (APQ) and also to validate this instrument in the target population.
