Assessing the psychedelic experience
Abstract
The Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ) is used in psychedelic research to assess a specific experience and predict treatment outcome. We suggest that the mystical terminology used in the MEQ is unnecessary to measure the underlying phenomenon, that using mystical terminology may influence participants’ interpretation of their psychedelic experiences, and that the MEQ might not discriminate well from other measures that try to capture parts of the psychedelic experience. We aim to investigate whether an alternative version of the MEQ (rephrasing of mystical terminology) retains its psychometric properties, whether administering the MEQ before asking people about their psychedelic experiences primes them to report about their experiences in a mystical manner, and to investigate the discriminative validity of the MEQ. Additionally, this survey serves to explore the relations between different measures of parts of the psychedelic experience as these are hardly ever all available from the same subjects.
