The promising therapeutic effects of ketamine and mindfulness based intervention for problem drinkers

OSFJun 29, 2023

Abstract

Recent advances in addiction research have highlighted the therapeutic potential of ketamine for alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, the exact mechanism for its efficacy remains to be discovered. This study aims to investigate the therapeutic effects of ketamine combined with mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) on trait mindfulness, well-being, alcohol craving and consumption in individuals who exhibit problem drinking. Additionally, the study will examine the underlying mechanisms that drive ketamine’s therapeutic effects, explicitly exploring whether ketamine enhances engagement (physical, psychological) in MBI. Within the study, 28 participants were randomly assigned to receive MBI combined with either esketamine or placebo. Trait mindfulness, well-being, and alcohol cravings were assessed at baseline, pre-drug, post-drug, and seven days post-drug. Alcohol consumption was measured at baseline and seven days post-drug. The study’s findings will add to the growing body of evidence that ketamine shows promise for treating addictions and will provide a greater understanding of the therapeutic functionality of ketamine in conjunction with MBI for problem drinkers.
