The effects of psilocybin on sensory perception using 7T fMRI and psychophysical tasks
Abstract
We will use a randomized cross-over within-subjects design to investigate the effects of different dosages of psilocybin (0, 5 or 10 mg) on sensory perception using a sample of N = 20 healthy volunteers. Participants will be invited to the lab for a baseline screening session to determine eligibility. Following this, participants will undergo 3 experimental sessions in which they are randomly administered a low-to-moderate dose of psilocybin. During each experimental session we will assess (1) neural effects of psilocybin using 7T fMRI (for details, see MRI methods below), (2) behavioral effects of psilocybin using psychophysical experimental tasks (for details, see Psychophysics methods below) and (3) subjective effects of psilocybin using validated scales (for details, see Subjective measures below). The main research question that we aim to address in this project is: does psilocybin affect compressive temporal summation, reflected in a more linear relationship between stimulus duration and neural responses across visual brain areas?
