Unlocking Possibilities: Psychedelics in Healthcare and Palliative Care: A Scoping Review
Abstract
This scoping review explores the growing interest in using psychedelic drugs for palliative care and end-of-life management, contrasting the historical use of these substances in Latin America with limited research in the region. Analyzing data from 2011 to 2024, we observe a notable increase in publications, particularly in the United States, Canada, and other countries. Using forecasting tools, we projected a continued upward trend in academic activity in this field. Despite technological advancements, Latin America lags due to limited research infrastructure. Emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach, we advocate further exploration of the therapeutic potential of psychedelics in palliative care, prioritizing patient well-being and addressing concerns such as death anxiety. By integrating psychedelic therapy into palliative care, we aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals facing the end of life, offering a compassionate and transformative approach to alleviate their suffering. Keywords: psychedelics; palliative care; end of life; quality of life; paradigm.
