Abstract

Abstract

While profound psychedelic and other exceptional experiences are often reported as the most profound events in experiencers’ lives, these events can be difficult to process and transmute into positive outcomes such as improved wellbeing and prosocial behaviour. Existing models of how these experiences are processed tend to present a single, linear pathway. To update and expand existing models of psychological processing following psychedelic and other exceptional experiences, 17 semi-structured experiencer interviews were conducted and analysed using reflective thematic analysis and transpersonal methods. A pathway framework prototype was identified from the data, including four distinct processing patterns: Challenging, Deep Surrender, What Goes Up, and Slow Flow. Implications of this four-pathway framework are considered for experiencers and helping professionals, along with suggestions for future research. Key recommendations include more research into the nuances and predictors of processing pathways and taking a longer view of the time it takes to process and integrate psychedelic and other exceptional experiences.
