Dataset for the study: Intraoperative analgesic requirements in dogs receiving retro-mammillary or erector spinae plane blocks for thoracolumbar or lumbar hemilaminectomy: a single-center retrospective cohort study
Abstract
This dataset contains the raw clinical data used for the statistical analysis in the retrospective cohort study titled " Intraoperative analgesic requirements in dogs receiving retro-mammillary or erector spinae plane blocks for thoracolumbar or lumbar hemilaminectomy: a single-center retrospective cohort study. " The study compared perioperative analgesic requirements, postoperative pain scores, and complication rates in client-owned dogs that received either an ultrasound-guided retromammillary (RM) block or an erector spinae plane (ESP) block as part of a multimodal analgesic protocol for thoracolumbar or lumbar hemilaminectomy. The dataset is provided as a single Excel (.xlsx) file containing the following information for 269 dogs: Demographics & Case Information: Case number, block type assigned (RM or ESP), sex, breed, age (years), weight (kg), and breed type/size. Surgical & Anesthetic Variables: Perioperative steroid and NSAID use (Y/N), number of intervertebral spaces fenestrated, duration of surgery and anesthesia (minutes), time to extubation (minutes), temperature at extubation, and occurrence of vomiting/regurgitation. Preoperative Analgesia: Premedication opioid type, opioid dose in morphine equivalents (ME/kg), other preoperative analgesic drugs and doses (mg/kg), and use of dexmedetomidine in premedication. Regional Anesthesia Details: Bupivacaine dose (mg/kg) and use of dexmedetomidine as a block adjuvant. Intraoperative Opioid Administration (ME): Preemptive ME/kg, rescue ME/kg, total intraoperative ME/kg, and total ME/kg/hour. (Note: These variables are provided both as raw datasets and with zeroes "w 0s" included for dogs that did not receive the drugs, alongside a Yes/No binary indicator for rescue analgesia). Intraoperative Adjuvant Analgesics: Use of non-opioid preemptive and rescue analgesics (e.g., ketamine, lidocaine, dexmedetomidine). Postoperative Analgesia: Time to first postoperative opioid (hours), postoperative opioid type, and cumulative ME/kg at 24 hours, 48 hours, and total. Complications & Interventions: Requirement for intraoperative cardiovascular intervention (Y/N), specific cardiovascular drugs administered, fluid boluses, and occurrence of postoperative dysphoria (Y/N). All patient or client-identifying information has been removed to ensure anonymity.
