Delineating the relationship between psychedelic drug use and facets of gratitude

OSFDec 21, 2020

Abstract

OVERVIEW Using both naturalistic (Study 1) and cross-sectional (Study 2) designs, I will be delineating the relationship among psychedelic drug use and facets of gratitude as well as identifying variables underlying these relationships. I will also be collecting data on changes in nature relatedness/appreciation and aesthetic experience. Study 1 will examine these questions by administering online questionnaires related to the aforementioned constructs one week before, one week after, and one month after individuals attend an ayahuasca retreat. Study 2 will examine the same questions by comparing psychedelic drug users with non-users using an online survey while controlling for potentially relevant covariates. Across both studies, it is hypothesized that psychedelic use will be related to increased gratitude, nature relatedness/appreciation, and aesthetic experience. I anticipate that the extent to which one experiences awe, ego dissolution, or a mystical experience during their psychedelic session will be related to increases in gratitude. HYPOTHESES Study 1: Naturalistic o Hypothesis 1 (H1): Participants will report increased gratitude, as measured by the Appreciation Scale, at both follow-ups. o Hypothesis 2 (H2): Scores on the MEQ30, AWE-S, and EDI will be positively correlated with increases in gratitude at both follow-ups. o Hypothesis 3: (H3): Scores on the connectedness facet of the AWE-S will explain unique variance in increases in the interpersonal facet of the Appreciation Scale above and beyond the other facets of the AWE-S. o Hypothesis 4 (H4): Participants will report increases in nature relatedness and nature appreciation at both follow-ups after their ayahuasca sessions as measured by the NR-6 and APR, respectively. o Hypothesis 5 (H5): Scores on the MEQ30, AWE-S, and EDI will be positively correlated with increases in nature relatedness and nature appreciation at both follow-ups. o Hypothesis 6 (H6): Participants will report increases in aesthetic experience at both follow-ups as measured by the AEQ. Study 2: Cross-sectional o Hypothesis 7 (H7): Psychedelic users will report higher levels of gratitude than non-users. o Hypothesis 8 (H8): Scores on the MEQ30, AWE-S, and EDI will be positively correlated with higher levels of gratitude in psychedelic users. o Hypothesis 9 (H9): Psychedelic users will report higher levels of nature relatedness and nature appreciation than non-users. o Hypothesis 10 (H10): Scores on the MEQ30, AWE-S, and EDI will be positively correlated with increased nature relatedness and nature appreciation in psychedelic users. o Hypothesis 11 (H11): Psychedelic users will report higher levels of aesthetic experience than non-users.
