Exploring Psychedelic Usage in Athletes and Attitudes Towards Psilocybin Use for Concussion Recovery
Abstract
This study is a survey-based thesis with three primary aims. The first is to examine the current rates of psychedelic usage among athletes across all levels of competition. The second is to examine the attitudes of athletes and sports team staff (i.e., coaches, trainers, administrators) toward psychedelics including psilocybin. The third is to examine athletes’ willingness to engage in psilocybin therapy for concussion recovery, as well as sports team staff’s willingness to support this treatment. We are interested in psilocybin due to the recent research findings that suggest psilocybin is effective in managing symptoms in those with psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. This study will be conducted across Canada and the United States of America using a 25-minute anonymized online survey on Qualtrics.
