Ketamine-Assisted Narrative Intervention (KANI) for Veterans with Chronic Low Back Pain and Co-Occurring Depression: Treatment Manual for Narrative Intervention Component

OSFJun 3, 2026

Abstract

Abstract: Ketamine-Assisted Narrative Intervention (KANI) is a brief, two-session narrative intervention intended to enhance the benefits of ketamine infusions for patients with both chronic back pain and depression. This manual has been prepared for pilot testing in Aim 2 of a larger, 5-year project, “Ketamine-assisted integrative treatment for Veterans with chronic low back pain and comorbid depression” (VHA CDA-2 5IK2CX002646-02) that is approved by the Ann Arbor VA IRB (#1701213). After obtaining written informed consent and completion of baseline measures described elsewhere, the first session involves introduction to the program and preparation for the experience of receiving ketamine. The participant then will receive a total of four ketamine infusions within a two-week period. The final session, involving integration of the experience and discussion of what this might mean for the future, will occur as soon as possible after the final infusion, depending on patient preference and availability, but no later than 48 hours.
