Adverse psychiatric effects of psychedelic drugs: a systematic review of case reports

OSFMay 29, 2024

Abstract

The potential therapeutic effects of LSD and psilocybin are currently a focus of interest. However, these drugs have also been reported to be associated with psychosis and other adverse psychiatric effects after both recreational and therapeutic use. These reports are often not easy to evaluate given that a) much of the relevant literature dates from the 1960s and 1970s when descriptions of symptoms were not always clear or used outmoded terminology; and b) case reports have sometimes been of individuals who also took other drugs besides psychedelics. This study addresses these issues by means of a systematic review of case reports of psychosis, major affective disorder and other psychiatric disorders (including flashbacks/hallucinogen persistent perceptual disorder, HPPD) related to use of LSD and other psychedelic drugs, as found via searches of PubMed, PsycINFO and Embase.
