Impact of Naturalistic Psychedelic Use on Behavioral Addictions

OSFFeb 6, 2025

Abstract

This study utilizes a mixed-methods design and will be collecting both quantitative and qualitative (open response) data. The primary objective in conducting this anonymous web-based survey is to characterize aspects of an individual’s drug-induced experience (i.e., hallucinogenic, oneirogenic, dissociative and empathogenic psychedelics including psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD], mescaline/peyote, dimethyltryptamine [DMT]/ayahuasca, 5-Methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine [5-MeO-DMT], ibogaine/iboga, ketamine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine [MDMA]) and the impact of this drug-induced experience on non-substance addictive behaviors, otherwise known as behavioral addictions (i.e., problems with gambling, video gaming, internet/social media use, pornography and other sexual behaviors, and shopping/spending behaviors). The results from this study should provide useful information regarding the substances, context, and types of drug-induced experiences and their association with patterns of engagement in behavioral addictions. As part of this large project pre-registration, a series of five studies will be conducted each with concise objectives. The studies are as follows: Study 1: The Effect of Psychedelic Use on Behavioral Addictions Study 2: Psychedelics and Behavioral Addictions: Decision Making and Behavioral Economics Study 3: Psychedelics and Behavioral Addictions: Associations with Differing Psychological Profiles Study 4: Psychedelics and Behavioral Addictions: Effects of Expectations on Self-Reported Benefits Study 5: A Mixed-Methods Analysis of The Impact of Psychedelic Use on Behavioral Addiction Problem Severity Details for the Hypotheses, Data Analysis and Exploratory Analysis will be reported separately for each study if applicable.
