Antidepressants
Abstract
Antidepressants remain a cornerstone in the management of major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, postpartum depression, anxiety disorders, and other psychiatric conditions. Expanding therapeutic options, including recently approved agents with novel mechanisms of action, have increased the need for clinicians to understand differences in indications, dosing, adverse effects, drug interactions, monitoring, and toxicity. This activity provides a comprehensive review of currently available antidepressant classes, including recent advances such as gepirone, zuranolone, esketamine, and dextromethorphan/bupropion. Participants enhance their ability to select individualized antidepressant therapy, recognize contraindications and clinically significant adverse effects, manage treatment-resistant depression, identify and treat overdose, and implement appropriate monitoring strategies. The activity also emphasizes evidence-based prescribing, patient education, and interprofessional collaboration to optimize medication safety, improve adherence, and enhance clinical outcomes for patients receiving antidepressants.
