Interventions delivered in healthcare settings or with the involvement of a health professional to support ketamine cessation in children and young people (under the age of 18 years): A scoping review protocol

OSFMay 29, 2026

Abstract

Introduction: Non-prescribed ketamine use in the UK is rising, including among CYP. Prolonged use of non-prescribed ketamine, particularly at higher doses, can lead to physical and psychological adverse effects and dependency. Limited provision exists to assist adults with ketamine cessation and even fewer interventions are available for CYP in the UK. There is little evidence as to what may be effective in this population. This review will identify and collate current evidence about interventions available in healthcare settings or delivered by a healthcare professional aimed at supporting ketamine cessation in children and young people (CYP) under 18 who use non-prescribed ketamine. Methods and analysis: This scoping review will identify published and grey literature on interventions for ketamine cessation delivered in healthcare settings or with the involvement of a healthcare professional for CYP under the age of 18 years. Studies or reports addressing CYP aged between 0-17 years old who currently use non-prescribed ketamine will be included in the review. Studies/reports will be excluded if interventions for cessation are solely aimed at parents/carers. Studies/reports must investigate interventions specifically targeting non-prescribed ketamine cessation in healthcare settings or with the involvement of a healthcare professional. Relevant literature/reports will be identified through a defined search in databases of peer-reviewed literature (Medline, Embase, Emcare, Health Management Information Consortium, CINAHL, Child Development & Adolescent Studies, PsycINFO, SCOPUS, PubMed, The Cochrane Library) and grey literature sources (TRIP Pro, Overton.io, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO ICTRP), from January 1990 to 2026. Organisational public health websites and targeted Google searches will also be used. Screening will be conducted by two independent reviewers in Rayyan. Data to be extracted will include study details (title, authors, date, country), population characteristics, details on intervention and outcomes. Study characteristics will be presented in a descriptive format, and details on interventions and context will be analysed and presented thematically. Ethics and dissemination: As a secondary analysis, ethical approval is not required. Dissemination of findings will be through publication, conference presentations and shared with relevant colleagues/partners and the CYP we work with who have lived or living experience of using non-prescribed ketamine.
