Lophophora Data Bundle: Peyote Trade, Harvest Impact, Range and Species Reference
Abstract
The Lophophora Data Bundle compiles four datasets on the genus Lophophora (peyote and its relatives) that have never been published together in a structured, citable form: the Texas Department of Public Safety licensed peyote distributor series (buttons sold, sales, price per 1,000, licensed distributors, 1986 to 2016), the Cactus Conservation Institute's harvest-regrowth survivorship and crown-mass study, a coarse county- or municipio-level range map covering all four Kew-accepted species plus the disputed koehresii population, and an elevation histogram built from the rarecactus.com field-number database (a Darwin Core aligned reference of collector field numbers, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20792878). The trade series figures are transcribed from Texas DPS distributor reports as compiled by Keeper Trout (Trout's Notes) and cross-checked against surviving primary tables; where transcriptions disagree, Trout's value is kept and the disagreement is logged in the CSV note column. The regrowth figures are drawn from the Cactus Conservation Institute's published studies (Terry, Trout, Williams, Herrera and Fowler 2011, 2012, 2014; Kalam et al. 2013). The species matrix and range markers are cross-checked against Kew's Plants of the World Online, the IUCN Red List, and live GBIF and iNaturalist occurrence data. The obscuration table documents, taxon by taxon, how iNaturalist's coordinate-privacy policy affects public occurrence data for this genus. The contribution of this dataset is the compilation, cross-verification and structuring layer: the individual trade figures, study results and taxonomic determinations remain the work of the original agencies, researchers and authorities cited throughout. This dataset is offered to make that record accessible in one place, not to assert ownership over it. No locality marker in this dataset resolves finer than county or municipio level, a deliberate editorial choice to avoid enabling wild-collection pressure on a genus already affected by illegal harvest.
