Mapping the psychedelic experience
Abstract
The wellbeing effects of psychedelics are predicted by the quality of the psychedelic experience. However, psychedelic experiences are varied and encompass a wide range of features, such as mystical-type aspects, psychological insights, and challenging emotions. It is not yet known how these features are interrelated and what is their relative importance for wellbeing. To clarify these questions, we aggregate data from previous experiments (estimated N = 5000) to examine the structure of psychedelic experiences and their relationship to wellbeing. Using both theory-driven and bottom-up approaches, we assess the validity of existing scales, explore how experience features interrelate, and identify which aspects are most predictive of positive outcomes.
