Abstract

Purpose
To evaluate the effects of two different anesthesia management techniques applied to sleeve gastrectomy patients on postoperative opioid consumption.
Design
Retrospective archival review observational study.
Methods
The hospital data management system scanned the files of 205 sleeve gastrectomy surgeries performed between June 2024 and March 2025. Patients who received fentanyl and/or ketamine as part of their standard anesthesia protocol and were managed with patient-controlled analgesia were included in the study.
Findings
The primary outcome measured in the study, opioid consumption, was significantly higher in the control group compared to the ketamine infusion group.
Conclusions
In patients with increased postoperative opioid consumption due to obesity, the addition of intraoperative ketamine infusion may be a viable option for balanced anesthesia management.
